Proofreading Your Academic Writing

Of course, it goes without saying that you cannot hand in your academic writing without proofreading it properly first. Once your essay is done, don't make the mistake of thinking that's the end of the road, because it's simply not - you need to check it, read it thoroughly, edit and proofread it to improve its quality and make it much more readable.

Proofreading, at the very basic level, means going through your paper again to make sure there are no spelling errors, grammatical errors, or punctuation mistakes. You need to review your paper very carefully to make sure it's free of typos, writing inconsistencies or even tired language. So how can you proofread your paper effectively?

You need lots of patience, time and accuracy for this. You would probably need to proofread your article or essay at least four or five times before you know it you have done the best job possible. Ensure the work meets all the guidelines or conditions laid down by your course instructor.

Whenever you're done with the paper, don't start proofreading it immediately. Give yourself some time off, you will not only get some distance from the writing, but you will be able to come back to it in a fresher state of mind. That way, you will be able to have a more unbiased, critical opinion of your writing, sentence and idea constructions.

A good way to proofread your article is to read it aloud to yourself - see if some parts sound different (or bad) when they are transferred to speech. Fix those parts. Your writing should have an even, steady pace which should develop slowly throughout the essay. Proofread thoroughly to make sure that your sentences are well-constructed, that there are no long lines or bad punctuation. Keep your paragraphs short and concise as well, never longer than three-fourths of a page. This makes the essay more readable.

When you are proofreading, you should make sure to do the following - get rid of any repetitions or unnecessary words, polish the transition sentences, improve quality of writing and introduce any required changes.

An important part of proofreading is making sure your paragraph flows are smooth. Make sure there are no long paragraphs combined with short ones - ideally, they should be well-combined and of even lengths. Jot down mistakes, fix them later on, and constantly go over it again and again to improve the quality of the work.
