Choosing A Topic
One of the primary woes that plague students, when it comes to academic writing, is the choosing of a topic. Often this can be the most difficult thing to do, and most students tend to fumble and get confused about what they should be writing on. Yes, once you have the topic, you know what to research on and everything automatically falls into place, but you need to choose a proper topic, first and foremost. Here are some suggestions and ideas on choosing a topic.
For many students who have not been assigned a topic, the task of choosing one becomes immensely difficult. However, this means that a student can choose a topic of his or her choice, can write on something of personal interest - therefore the essay would be a much stronger one.
You must first define your purpose - think about that the essay you need to write. What is your aim? Is it to make people see the same viewpoint as you? Is it to educate your audience about a particular incident, place, or person? The topic that you think of must be according to your purpose. It is a good idea to think about subjects that personally interest you - for instance, if you like Rock Music, you could write a paper on the downfall of certain bands, or if you are interested in the poet John Milton, you could choose to write a paper on the subject of imagery in his epic poem "Paradise Lost". The possibilities are endless, simply sit yourself down, and write down subjects that you are interested in. then you can pick and choose from among these.
Evaluate these topics - consider each one on its own, think about how you feel about that topic, and how you could write about it. You must make sure that it is a topic on which adequate matter will be available; this will make researching much easier. If your purpose is to persuade, then you must choose a topic that you feel strongly about - otherwise the essay would come out mild and bleak.
Take time to look at each topic one by one. Which one do you like? Which one do you feel personally interested in? Even if you don't like any of the topics which you have written down, try to start on at least one - it may turn out much better (in the process of writing), than you originally thought.
