Tips On Writing a literature paper (by Joyce Campbell, Mar 30, 2012)

It is always more interesting to write a paper on Literature than subjects like Biology or Public Relations. The best thing about it is that you can choose from an array of aspects to write from.

Even though there are no hard and fast rules to writing a literature paper, the following points could help make you produce a more organized paper.

Choose a theme: Brainstorm and find out what aspect/what kind of literature would you be writing about.

Research: Once you have chosen your theme, you need to get all the materials you would require in order to write that paper. Make sure the materials so collected are directly related to the topic you would be approaching.

Compilation: Compile the research material, and keep it close at hand when you finally sit down to make the draft of your essay.

Drafting: It is advisable to make a rough draft of the essay you would be writing. As in an outline, so that your points do not get jumbled up midway later on. This clearly makes it easier while writing the actual essay.

Writing: You do not actually write essays on literature. It could be the literary analysis of a book. Or a comparative study between two novels, or maybe even a book report on the book you have read in your previous World Literature class. However, while writing certain things need to be kept in mind.

Language: You cannot write short, crisp sentences while writing a literature essay. The language needs to flow, and be flowery to a certain extent. But this does not in any way mean you can write pages of flowery language which has no relevance to the actual topic. The written language is very different from the language we speak. Don't write your essay in the colloquial language.

Grammar and Punctuation: Be very careful with your grammar while writing. Use the proper punctuations, and proof read your essay for any silly mistakes.

Quotes: Use quotations in your essay. Refer to works of more renowned people, if they have addressed the same issue you have. Instead of plagiarizing their works, give glancing reference to it and express what you have to say about the matter.

Acknowledgement: In the end of your essay, do not forget to mention the names of the people whose references you have made.
