Tips on writing a language and linguistics paper (by Nicole Peterson, Apr 06, 2012)

Linguistics being the scientific study of natural languages, you could make your work solely on this aspect.

• Decide: A language and linguistics paper provides you with ample things to write about. You could choose from writing about how language came into being, to the different types of linguistics that we come across. The oldest and the comparatively newest languages.


• Research: Once you have decided on a particular topic, ransack the library or even the internet, for any kind of information related to it. Make a note of the even mildly relevant things you stumble across.


• Compile: Keep the notes you have made close at hand, and begin writing the rough drafts. It is better to write a couple of drafts.


• Format: Always use black ink while writing any paper. If you are going to take a print out of your paper, use the Times New Roman font size 12 for your body of the paper, and keep only the heading as a 14 size font.


• Write: Begin writing your paper. Like any normal essay, it should have an introduction, body and conclusion. You are allowed to the liberty of playing with your knowledge of flowery words, but address the question. Don't just display your skills as a writer. Convince your teacher of your skills as a research worker.


• Grammar, Punctuation & Tenses: Be careful with your grammar. It is inexcusable to make grammar mistakes in such a paper. Punctuation is another aspect of the paper that one needs to be careful about. Be careful in the usage of your colons, semi-colons, commas, and full stops. And lastly, do not get your tenses mixed up as this creates a bad impression on the reader. Since this a literature essay you will be writing, it is better you use the past tense.


• Quotations & References: While writing this paper, you are expected to give textual reference. Quotes would definitely be used in these particular papers, where you are presenting a certain theme.


• Comparisons: You could write about the different linguistics, and how they differ from one another. Which language is more useful than others, etc.


• Finishing Touch: Conclude your essay with the final verdict on the matter. Proofread for any over looked errors, and finally hand the paper in on the correct time.
