Tips for writing a sociology paper (by Sara Utterback, Mar 24, 2012)
The research you need to do for a sociology paper would mean really getting into physical work, to provide evidence for what you would be writing about. The internet or the books would just guide, but you would have to really go around town and hunt of materials that would be relevant to your paper. However, the basic structure of the paper would remain more or less the same.
- Research: When your topic has been picked, just hunt for the information that you would require. As facts never speak for themselves in sociology, you really need to get proof for whatever you might be working on.
- Compilation, Drafting: Once the research is done, these materials should be compiled and a few rough drafts of the final paper should be made.
- Formatting: Always use a black ink while writing your paper. If are printing it out, Times New Roman is the font to opt for, with size 12. The size 14 should be used for the heading.
- Introduction: While writing, introduce the topic you would be working on first. Do not give unnecessary details, but provide your reader with ample knowledge of the question you would be answering.
- Body: A sociology paper's body generally has three parts. A) The beginning where the writer gives background information on the subject, and addresses the question. B) The middle where statistics and data are provided to support the views expressed or to be expressed in the paper. C) The last part, which has the writer's personal opinion on the matter.
- Conclusion: The conclusion would vary if the topics of the paper vary. You could address further questions, draw a final answer or even leave suggest a way in which the problems can be taken care of.
- Critique: If you are quoting works of other sociologist's, don't just quote. Write a critique of their opinion.
- Writing: While writing, remember this is a sociology paper. So write sentences that make sense, instead of long, flowery ones. Check your grammar and punctuation, even while writing the paper. Proofreading is a must, as it brings to our notice the grammatical or technical errors we may have overlooked.
- Revise: Revise your essay to see whether you have addressed the question that had been asked.
